Kamloops Fire Rescue emphasizes smoke alarm maintenance during Fire Prevention Week

KAMLOOPS — Checking smoke alarms is the main focus for Kamloops Fire Rescue (KFR) during Fire Prevention Week.

KFR encourages residents to check their smoke alarms every month and check and change their batteries every six months. According to KFR Life Safety Educator Jeff Pont, smoke alarms can reduce the risk of dying in a fire by 50 per cent. He adds that properly discarding smoking materials and paying attention while cooking are two key fire preventive measures.

Pont believes the summer of interface fires and wildfires has residents more in tune with fire safety messaging.

“I think that we’re all aware what fire can do and how quickly things can happen. Fire prevention is more focused on those residential house fires and what we can do to prevent those,” Pont says.

KFR is still connecting with Kamloops schools for Fire Prevention Week, albeit virtually due to rising COVID-19 concerns. Pont says classrooms can send videos to KFR and teach them about fire safety to win prizes, including a pizza party delivered by KFR and Sparky.

Pont adds anyone who checks their smoke alarm during Fire Prevention Week and tags KFR online will be entered into a draw for $500.
