LILLOOET, B.C. — Lillooet RCMP are investigating a standoff where police shot and arrested a man with a homemade spear and arrested a nearby resident who was cheering him on.

On Monday (Sept. 27), at around 11:00 a.m., Lillooet RCMP were called to a home near Moha Road and Landfill Road, after receiving reports that a man was being chased with a knife.

Upon arrival, an officer tried to arrest the man for assault with a weapon when he began running toward police with a homemade spear and the knife. The officer was not injured.

According to the Lillooet RCMP, the man appeared to be having a mental health issue, however he continued to be aggressive with police and refused to obey commands to drop the homemade spear.

This resulted in a three-hour standoff with the Emergency Response Team (ERT) until he eventually was shot with a ‘less-lethal’ 40 mm round that knocked him to the ground.

He was arrested for assault with a weapon, apprehended under the Mental Health Act, and transported to Royal Inland Hospital. The file is still under investigation.

As this was happening, a nearby resident began yelling at the male attempting to encourage him, harassing local police and ERT members while they were engaged with the male who had two weapons.

The resident was told to return inside his house, however he refused and continued. At one point, he even asked police to help him with some firewood while they were still in the middle of the standoff.

After the male with weapons was arrested, the nearby resident was arrested for obstructing a police officer and transported to cells. The resident was subsequently released with a future court date.
