KAMLOOPS — A Kamloops BMX racer has raised nearly $8,000 for children fighting leukemia at the BC Children’s Hospital.

Twelve-year-old Jacobus Arnold has been gathering bottles with his mother and grandmother since the beginning of the year and bringing them to the bottle depot.

Arnold normally raises the money as part of a BMX competition he enters every year. Because of COVID-19, competitions have been put to a halt — but that didn’t stop him from making a contribution this year.

“It’s exciting because I get to help a lot of kids, and this year in January, one of my friends was diagnosed with Lukemia,” Arnold told CFJC News.

Arnold has been raising money for children with leukemia for six years. It’s a cause that hits close to home for his family, and grandma has supported him along the way.

“When I was 14, my older sister died of leukemia, so it’s got a really personal feeling for this. I’m as proud as I could ever be of this boy,” said Glendene Grant, Arnold’s grandmother.
