SOUND OFF: Budget consultation is your chance to shape B.C.’s recovery

Sep 22, 2021 | 9:55 AM

THE SELECT STANDING COMMITTEE ON FINANCE AND GOVERNMENT SERVICES, made up of MLAs from government and opposition, is in the process of seeking public input about what should be in the 2022 Provincial Budget. This is an annual opportunity and this year it may be more important than ever.

The COVID-19 pandemic has touched the lives of everyone in B.C. Every person, every community and every sector of our economy has been impacted in different ways.

Our government has been adaptable and responsive to the changing circumstances of this challenging time. B.C. is the only province to see our employment rates return to and exceed pre-pandemic levels. We are not out of the woods yet, but while we work to get through the pandemic together, we also need to look ahead. That’s where you come in.

We want to hear from British Columbians about your priorities for the next budget. As chair of the committee, I am inviting you to make a submission to tell us what you and your community need most.

The budget consultation period launched on June 30, 2021 and runs until September 30. There are several ways you can participate. You can fill out a survey, share your comments in writing or make a video or audio recording.

What services do you and your family count on? What barriers are you facing to growing your small business? What skills or training do you need start a rewarding new career? How can we make sure nobody in this province is left behind?

These are the questions we are looking for your help to answer. Our economic recovery from the pandemic must lift everyone up, not just those at the top.

We want to hear all of your ideas, but it’s helpful if you can summarize and rank your top three to five priorities. We also want to hear your reasoning or explanation of how your ideas would make life better for you, your community, or the province.

You can find all the details and submit your comments at bcleg.ca/FGSbudget. Remember, you only have until 5:00 p.m. on September 30, so now is the time to get started.

As a government, everything we do is based on a few key principles; putting people first, working towards meaningful reconciliation, addressing climate change and building a strong economy that works for everyone.

We want your input into how we can continue working towards these goals.

I’m eager to hear your ideas, your hopes, and your priorities. Let’s continue building a strong recovery, together.
