Smooth start to vaccine card checks at recreational facilities in Kamloops

KAMLOOPS — While some individuals are voicing their opposition to being asked to provide proof of vaccination cards for non-essential activities, it’s been a quiet adjustment at City of Kamloops recreation facilities.

The City’s Recreation, Health and Wellness Supervisor, Linda Stride, says the majority of people who have used the Tournament Capital Centre on Day One are fine with the carding process.

“I think most people have come prepared. We’ve had the odd one that have forgotten something and had to run to the vehicle to get the appropriate ID, but so far everybody coming in has been easy to deal with.”

Immunization cards are not needed to access City buildings for paying bills, picking up permits or anything business related, and they’re also not required for public swimming or recreation programs for youth 18 and under. However, Stride notes that arenas, community centres, and fitness centres need to see the card.

“If you’re 22 years and older using our gyms or our fieldhouse, drop-in basketball, table tennis, you are required to show your proof of vaccination, and your government ID.”

Residents only need to show proof of one dose starting this week, but after October 24, two-dose confirmation will be needed to access some events, services, and businesses.

“The visual check is all we need to do.” says Stride. “We’ve been told by the provincial health office all we need to do is see their vaccination card and their ID, so we don’t need to actually scan it.”
