Drug alert issued for Kamloops, white substance contains fentanyl and benzodiazepines

KAMLOOPS — Interior Health (IH) issued a drug alert for a toxic substance being sold and used in Kamloops.

IH says a white substance – that turns black with harsh chemical taste when smoked – sold as “down” was found to contain cocaine, fentanyl, benzodiazepines, Phenacetin, and another unknown substance.

The risk to users is overdose, along with possible vein damage if injected. Smoking is also not recommended.

The drug alert is in effect from Monday (Sept. 13) to Sept. 20.

Drug checking is available at the Supervised Consumption Service at 569 Seymour St. from Tuesday to Friday between 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and ASK Wellness on Tranquille Road from Monday to Friday between 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

IH says methods to prevent overdose include:

  • Avoid mixing
  • Use with others around or at an Overdose Prevention Site
  • Start with a small amount
  • Carry naloxone and know how use it
