KAMLOOPS — Construction crews will be out in Kamloops on Monday (Sept. 13).

Work begins on the Summit Multi-Use Path (MUP) project on Summit Drive between Whiteshield Crescent South and Notre Dame Drive. Single lane alternating traffic may be occasionally in effect during off-peak hours.

The 850-metre multi-use path joins dedicated bike lanes on Summit at Whiteshield with the Xget’tem’ Trail path starting at Notre Dame Drive, which travels through Peterson Creek Nature Park to downtown.

The Summit MUP project also includes:

  • Two-metre brick separation strip with trees, lighting upgrades, and curb letdowns
  • Highway on-ramp traffic signal on Summit Drive at the Trams Canada Highway on-ramp heading east
  • Smart Right Turn Channel at Highway 1 on-ramp for improved traffic safety
  • Rectangular Rapid Flash Beacon at Whiteshield Crescent for pedestrian crossing

The City of Kamloops says construction is expected to last until June 2022. The city was a recipient of a $4 million grant from the federal government of the Summit MUP, and the Sixth Avenue Bike Protected Bike Lane project starting in spring 2022.

Elsewhere, the City of Kamloops contracted BA Dawson Blacktop to mill and repave Lansdowne Street, Victoria Street, and Battle Street between Seventh and 13th Avenue.

Work will begin Monday and is expected to be completed by the end of October. Construction is scheduled Monday to Saturday between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.

The city says one travel lane in each direction will always be maintained, except for a short-term full closure of 10th Avenue. There will be no on-street parking during the construction’s timeframe.

Residents are told to expect delays and plan accordingly. Vibratory compaction equipment may be used, and any fragile items should be packaged or protected. The city says there may be noise disruption.
