KAMLOOPS — Interior Health (IH) says it is attempting to address staffing challenges at Royal Inland Hospital (RIH).

In a release Saturday (Sept. 11) morning — three days after a patient died in a waiting room outside of RIH’s emergency room, a summer where RIH’s nursing shortage has been brought to light, and two days after an impromptu conference held by Health Minister Adrian Dix touching on all of the above — IH says two new permanent nurses have been hired for the emergency department and are undergoing orientation.

Additionally, temporary nurses are being brought in to support permanent staff in the RIH emergency department. IH says four are scheduled to start next week, and more will be brought in as needed.

“Where possible, we are redeploying and reassigning clinical staff who can provide immediate support and relief to the emergency department shifts at RIH, and other areas of the site that need extra support,” IH states. “IH is establishing a central recruitment team dedicated to RIH which will streamline the hiring process and shorten the time it takes to fill a vacant position. We are committed to filling all vacant positions as quickly as possible.”

IH says it invested $1 million in new funding this year specifically to add staff to the RIH emergency department, including a registered nurse patient care coordinator for night shifts, an additional registered nurse and licensed practical nurse for the daytime/evening shift, and an additional registered practical nurse on days.

According to IH, a full staffing complement on nights in the RIH emergency department is 11 registered nurses, one registered psychiatric nurse and one licensed practical nurse.

IH says the summer’s wildfire activity and rising numbers of COVID-19 cases across the region are contributing factors to staffing challenges at RIH, along with a high number of people accessing emergency department services at times.
