COVID-19 outbreak declared at Kamloops Senior Village, 242 new cases in Interior Health

VICTORIA — The B.C. government reported 655 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday (Aug. 31), including four epi-linked cases, with 242 of them in Interior Health.

Provincially, there are 6,045 active cases of COVID-19 (up by 127), with 2,495 of them in Interior Health (up by 71). Of the provincial active cases, 187 individuals are in hospital (up by nine), with 103 of them in intensive care (up by 12). The remaining people are recovering at home in self-isolation.

Two new deaths related to COVID-19, both in Island Health, were reported in the past 24 hours. The provincial total rose to 1,816.

Elsewhere, 186 new cases were reported in Fraser Health (1,418 active), 99 in Vancouver Coastal Health (1,026), 68 in Island Health (620), and 60 in Northern Health (479). There were no new cases of people who reside outside of Canada, although that total active count sits at seven.

There is one new health-care facility outbreak at Kamloops Senior Village in Interior Health. There are now 19 active outbreaks, with 13 of them in Interior Health, including Nicola Meadows in Merritt.

As of Aug. 31, 84.3 per cent (3,908,860) of eligible people 12 and older in B.C. have received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine, while 76.5 per cent (3,547,751) have received their second.

Cases by vaccine status

Between Aug. 23 and 29, there were 4,698 COVID-19 cases reported, with 69.9 per cent (3,285) of those from unvaccinated individuals, 10.3 per cent (485) from partially vaccinated, and 19.8 per cent (928) from fully vaccinated.

In that timeframe per 100,000 population, 212.1 were unvaccinated, 124.9 were partially vaccinated, and 28.7 were fully vaccinated.

Over the past two weeks (Aug. 16 to 29), there were 186 COVID-19 hospitalizations. 80.6 per cent (150) were unvaccinated, 8.1 per cent (15) were partially vaccinated, and 11.3 per cent (21) were fully vaccinated. Per 100,000 population, unvaccinated individuals had 9.6, while partially vaccinated had 3.5 and fully vaccinated had 0.7 hospitalizations.
