BC Wildfire Service reports progress on all flanks of White Rock Lake wildfire

KAMLOOPS — Crews continue to see positive progress along all flanks of the White Rock Lake wildfire.

In its Saturday (Aug. 28) update, the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) says infrared drone scans will continue to be carried out along the west, east and northern flanks to help personnel target remaining hot spots along these flanks. The expansive size of the fire requires a substantial workforce to ensure mop-up and patrol operations are thorough.

Friday (Aug. 27) afternoon, 5 milimetres of rain was received in the Fintry area, as well as minimal amounts in other areas of the fire.

BCWS says 60 Canadian Armed Forces personnel are arriving on-site Saturday and another 60 will arrive to assist with patrol efforts along the west and north flanks of the fire.

Due to rain received in the Six Mile Creek area, BCWS says conditions on-site today are again not favourable for the 3000-hectare planned ignition operation.

Elsewhere, temperatures in the mid-to-high 20’s, light winds, and cool overnight temperatures are keeping fire activity at the Lytton Creek Complex low.

As the fire guards near completion and more provincial resources become available, BCWS says operations will shift focus from heavy equipment and air support to additional Type One fire crews that are trained to work in areas of high fire activity.

As of noon Friday, an area restriction is in effect within the fire perimeter east of Highway 8 for the safety of fire crews and the public. Access is limited to fire operations and other essential services as well as those travelling to or from principal residences.
