Interior not in the clear for wildfires thanks to a clear sky

KAMLOOPS — Light rain and cooler temperatures have given B.C.’s wildland firefighters some breathing room for the major wildfires in the Thompson-Okanagan region.

Both the Tremont Creek and Sparks Lake fires saw precipitation over the past week, allowing crews to gain better control and apply direct attack methods. The White Rock Lake fire, however, did not see as much rain and still remains an area of concern.

“The fuels down there, especially the deeper fuels, are still quite dry — especially with the recent elevated winds in the area and the temperatures are expected to rise into the mid-20s in that area throughout the week. It’s definitely still important for people to be vigilant for that fire,” said Shaelee Stearns, fire information officer for the B.C. Wildfire Service.

Most of the Interior region is getting a much needed break from the smoke, and although the temperatures aren’t high, the clear skies will allow the sun to shine direct sunlight on the dry fuels — so fire season is definitely not over.

“It’s important to remember that things can dry out and it still remains to be very dry right now, so having a couple of days with warmer temperatures with no precipitation or a high humidity can definitely lead to those fuels being quite dry,” Stearns said.
