MERRITT, B.C. — Merritt City Councillor Mike Bhangu has been charged with uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm. Merritt RCMP confirm they received a report of uttering threats on July 5.

“The Merritt RCMP received a report of Uttering Threats that had occurred the previous evening in the 1700 block of Bann Street,” stated Sgt. Josh Roda.

“A thorough investigation was completed and on August 16, 2021, Mr. Manmohan Singh Bhangu was charged with one count of Utter Threats,” added Roda.

Bhangu is currently scheduled to appear before the Merritt Law Courts on September 14, 2021.

Merritt Council is scheduled to hold a meeting on August 31, and Bhangu will be able to take his seat according to City Staff.

“My understanding is he will be in his seat, if he isn’t that is his choice. There is no provision in the Community Charter, Local Government Act or the City’s Procedure Bylaw that would force any action to be taken at this time,” confirmed Director of Corporate Services Greg Lowis.
