COVID-19 outbreak declared at Nicola Meadows as B.C. reports 553 new cases

VICTORIA — A COVID-19 outbreak has been declared at an assisted living facility in Merritt.

Nicola Meadows was added to B.C.’s outbreak list in the province’s COVID-19 report on Wednesday (Aug. 18).

Elsewhere, there are eight active outbreaks in long-term care facilities in the province. Five are in Interior Health (Nelson Jubilee Mano, Kootenay Street Village, Cottonwoods Care Centre in Kelowna, Village at Mill Creek in Kelowna, and Brookhaven Care Centre in West Kelowna), two in Fraser Health (Kin Village West Court in Delta and Evergreen Baptist Care Society in White Rock) and one in Island Health (Discovery Harbour in Campbell River).

In assisted or independent living facilities, there are two outbreaks in Kelowna: Hawthorn Park and David Lloyd Jones Home.

Daily numbers

For the second day in a row, Interior Health accounted for less than 50 per cent of B.C.’s new COVID-19 cases.

B.C. is reporting 553 new cases of COVID-19, including one epi-linked case, with 230 of them in Interior Health.

There are 5,580 (+284) active cases of COVID-19 in B.C., with 3,203 (+119) in Interior Health. Provincially, 107 individuals (-4) are in hospital, with 53 (+2) in intensive care.

In the past 24 hours, one new death in Fraser Health was reported. The provincial total is 1,782.

Elsewhere, there were 152 new cases in Fraser Health (990 active), 97 in Vancouver Coastal Health (811 active), 38 in Island Health (337), and 36 in Northern Health (230). No new cases were reported for people who reside outside of Canada, although that active count is nine.

As of Wednesday, 82.8 per cent of eligible people 12 and older in B.C. have received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine, while 73.8 per cent have received their second.
