KAMLOOPS — The community of Cherry Creek, west of Kamloops, is on evacuation alert because of the Tremont Creek wildfire, an alert that was issued Thursday afternoon.

On Friday, dozens of community members gathered for a public meeting to ask questions to the B.C. Wildfire Service and weigh their options if the alert is upgraded to an order.

The meeting was organized by Thompson-Nicola Regional District Area ‘J’ Director Ronaye Elliott, a Cherry Creek resident. Many residents there have livestock and need to move them, although some already have. Elliott has two horses herself and wants to encourage people to make a plan for the worst.

“We have a lot of Cherry Creek residents who are small farmers and we’re going to have to have a really good understand of where we’re going to go and what we’re going to if there’s an order put on here,” Elliott said. “To Chilliwack is probably not where we want to take our horses.”

The meeting also featured incident commander for the Tremont Creek fire Hugh Murdoch. He says the fire is about 10 kilometres away from Cherry Creek as of Friday afternoon. He stressed during the meeting that people need to be prepared now.

“We really want them to understand the upcoming weekend could be exceptionally hazardous. The forecast is far from favourable,” said Murdoch. “Their situation relative to the fire, and the amount of animals in the area, really puts them in a position where we hope they will continue to take the steps they’ve been taking, and perhaps learn from some of their neighbours what steps those folks have taken.”
