Nanaimo’s Reuse Rendezvous aims to bolster waste diversion

NANAIMO — Household items in need of a new home are up for grabs with the return of the popular Reuse Rendezvous event.

Nanaimo residents are invited to place their usable goods outside their homes on Saturday, Aug. 14 and Sunday Aug. 15 to be claimed as opposed to ending up recycled or in the landfill.

Taaj Daliran, the City of Nanaimo’s manager of sanitation, recycling and public works, said the annual swap is a good fit for things like furniture, tools, electronics or any other non-hazardous household items.

“This is an opportunity for re-using and giving life back to the items that are re-usable,” he told NanaimoNewsNOW.

Daliran pointed out the event sees many people offload their goods free of charge, while others can also sell items if they desire.

The well subscribed community building event could be enhanced in some form in the future, Daliran said.

“Based on the history which has been successful, maybe moving forward we expand the frequency of it to more than once a year.”

Items should be positioned to ensure sidewalks, roadways and bike paths are not blocked.

Daliran reminds people using Reuse Rendezvous to de-clutter their homes or workplaces to re-claim any remaining items by the morning of Monday, Aug. 16.

For the second year in a row the City’s annual trunk sale at the Country Club Centre parking lot was canceled due to the pandemic.
