KAMLOOPS — The City of Kamloops and local Chamber of Commerce are teaming up to create a new grant for businesses impacted by vandalism and graffiti.

The City says in a news release today (Aug. 12) it will allocate up to $50,000 for a Vandalism Cleanup Support Grant Program to aid businesses directly affected by vandalism and graffiti.

“We recognize the impact that vandalism and graffiti are having on the business community and customers,” Mayor Ken Christian states in the release. “We want to help reduce the financial burden of businesses that are required to repair and clean up their properties while we continue to work together with the community to find long-term solutions.”

To be eligible, businesses need to be located within city limits, and can apply for up to $500 for up to two incidents. The funds must be used to cover the cost of cleanup and repair. The damage must have occurred after the program has been initiated.

Program details are being finalized with the Chamber, including the application process and criteria to administer funds. The City and the Chamber aim to open the program to applications by the end of August.

Kamloops Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Acacia Pangilinan says businesses need long term solutions, but they also need action in the short-term.

“We recognize the need to reduce the current and pressing negative impacts in our community that are putting unnecessary pressure on our economic recovery and we seek to continue this discussion and work with the City of Kamloops and all other respective partners.”

Businesses that would like to receive a free crime prevention property assessment can find more details and apply online at Kamloops.ca/CPTED.
