Kamloops residents warned of recent phone scam incidents

KAMLOOPS — Kamloops RCMP are warning the public about another series of phone scams.

The local detachment says over the past week, several incidents have caught their attention, with one victim losing tens of thousands of dollars in a phone scam. The latest ploy has callers impersonating RCMP officers.

On August 4, one woman received a call from someone claiming to be an RCMP constable, saying her grandson had been arrested. She then spoke with someone who claimed to be her grandson, and was told to send $10,000 to an address in Ontario. The woman sent the money, and when the scammers continued calling and asking for funds, she sent more. The third time, the woman grew suspicious of the situation and reported it to Kamloops RCMP.

“These fraudsters can sound very convincing, using similar and common last names to present as constables who may actually work in a local detachment,” said Cst. Crystal Evelyn, Kamloops RCMP spokesperson.

“It’s so important to know that a real police officer would never ask for money to be transferred on behalf of your relative. Please, if you get a call like this, no matter what you’re told on the phone, do your own investigation and call a number you know to belong to your local detachment and real police officers.”

Evelyn notes other scams can involve bank employee impersonators who claim an account has been compromised, and needs to be fixed with Mastercard and Visa gift cards.

Fraud victims are encouraged to call police to report the incident, and record all details of the interaction – including phone numbers, email addresses, and what the conversation included. If you have not been a victim of a fraud but have information related to scams, please report to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1 888-495-8501.
