B.C. reports 1,079 new COVID-19 cases, 587 of them in Interior Health

KAMLOOPS — According to the latest update from health officials, Interior Health accounted for more than half of B.C.’s new COVID-19 cases over a three-day period.

Between Aug. 6 and 9, the province is reporting 1,079 new cases of COVID-19, with 587 of them (54 per cent) in Interior Health.

Provincially, there are 3,036 active cases of COVID-19 in the province, with 1,755 of them (58 per cent) in Interior Health. Of the provincial active cases, 68 individuals are hospitalized, with 20 in intensive care. The remaining people are recovering at home in self-isolation.

There were five new deaths over the three-day stretch: four were in Interior Health, while one was in Northern Health. The provincial total is 1,777.

Elsewhere, there were 258 new cases in Fraser Health (586 active), 142 in Vancouver Coastal Health (387), 62 in Island Health (188), and 30 in Northern Health (108). There were no new cases from people who reside out of Canada, although 12 cases are still active.

The daily breakdown is as follows:

  • Aug. 6 to 7: 422 new cases
  • Aug. 7 to 8: 364 new cases
  • Aug. 8 to 9: 293 new cases

There are seven active outbreaks in long-term care. Within Interior Health, there’s Nelson Jubilee Mano, Kootenay Street Village, Cottonwoods Care Centre in Kelowna, and Brookhaven Care Centre in West Kelowna. The rest are in Fraser Health (Holyrood Manor in Maple Ridge and Kin Village West Court in Delta) and Island Health (Discovery Harbour in Campbell River).

As of Aug. 9, 82.0 per cent (3,801,960) of eligible people 12 and older in B.C. have received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine, while 70.3 per cent (3,257,931) have received their second.

The B.C. government dropped the interval between first and second doses to 28 days.
