BC Wildfire Service: Light rain did not impact fires

KAMLOOPS — Rainfall over the weekend helped ease some of the evacuation orders across the Thompson Nicola region, but it was not enough to have an impact on the wildfires of note in the Kamloops Fire Centre.

“The first one of note is the White Rock Lake fire, so that one is estimated to be 32,312 hectares,” said BC Wildfire Service Fire Information Officer Taylor MacDonald. “On July 31, they saw some aggressive overnight fire growth that was observed along the south plank toward Seaton Lake where much of the fire perimeter crossed over onto the Salmon River Forest Service Road there.”

The fire growth put nearby properties on evacuation order on Aug. 1 and 2, but it has since been rescinded to an evacuation alert. Surrounding properties near the Sparks Lake fire are also on evacuation alert as it remains the biggest fire in the province, sitting at nearly 70,000 hectares and has merged with the nearby Young Lake fire, becoming one.

“The main fire movement on this fire is to the north and the northeast which has been predominantly away from the communities on the southern flanks of the fire,” MacDonald explained.

The Kamloops Fire Centre saw six new fires on the long weekend, which was more quiet than usual. However, the Tremont Creek fire is still uncontained with most of its fire movement between the south and east perimeters.

“Crews are working on building machine guard around the Tunkwa Provincial Park area, and they do have some planned ignitions that will be starting tomorrow on the Glossy Mountain area to contain the southern plank of the fire. So there will be some increased smoke on this incident,” MacDonald told CFJC News.

There might not be a break from the smoke, but the Kamloops Fire Centre said it had a fairly quiet long weekend with only six new fires reported, but its going to take a lot more rain before we see any relief.
