Predicted rain in Kamloops region could slow wildfires but won’t stop them

KAMLOOPS – For the first time in weeks, the Kamloops area could see some precipitation. Environment Canada is predicting rain showers over the long weekend.

“Much of the region will get some showers,” says Environment Canada Meteorologist Doug Lundquist. “I’m thinking 5 to 15 millimetres, which I know isn’t as much as we usually want…but it’s something and it’s going to help.”

If the prediction comes through, the showers will arrive as another heat wave dissipates over the region. And when the showers arrive, they will likely come with lightning storms, which bring the potential of more fires.

As of this afternoon (July 29), there are 80 active fires in the Kamloops Fire Centre and 243 across the province. The largest fire in the province continues to be the Sparks Lake fire, which has grown to more than 65 thousand hectares.
