Incoming child care spaces at SD68 schools delayed

NANAIMO — Numerous child care spaces at schools throughout Nanaimo and Ladysmith won’t be ready for the fall.

SD68 informed the public on Wednesday, July 28 construction at four schools is delayed, impacting Forest Park, Chase River, Ladysmith Primary and Rock City Elementary.

Dale Burgos, executive director of communications with the school district, told NanaimoNewsNOW the postponement is caused by construction delays due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

No timeline is in place for when the spaces will open.

Spaces at the four schools were announced in July, 2020 and total nearly 275 new spaces.

Burgos said preliminary reports didn’t anticipate a projected increase to the cost of the project due to the delay. SD68 is using its own work force on the project, which Burgos said was to ensure the most efficient use of money in construction.

In recent months the province announced a slate of new child care spaces for the Nanaimo area, with 180 for schools within SD68.
