Parksville Food Bank in dire need of fresh produce

PARKSVILLE — Hundreds of people in the Oceanside region could be forced to go without fresh fruits and vegetables.

The Parksville Food Bank is running desperately low on fresh produce.

Bonnie Brown with the Mount Arrowsmith Salvation Army said they won’t be able to fulfill their mandate of helping others to make healthy choices.

“We’re asking anyone with a home garden to consider donating excess yields throughout the summer. Whatever you have growing and ripening now all through the summer, we’ll happily take all variety of fruit and vegetables. You name it, we’ll take it.”

The food bank supports roughly 500 households each month and provides roughly 400 meals each week from its soup kitchen.

“Our food bank recipients can be the working poor, seniors, individuals experiencing homelessness or really anyone who’s struggling to make ends meet.”

Brown said grants which help keep their shelves stocked are running low during the summer, a time when food donations generally decrease.

The only requirement for donated food is the produce be clean and unspoiled.

Any donations can be dropped off at the French Creek location Monday to Thursday between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m.
