Lions could be explosive with addition of speedy Whitehead — if Reilly is protected

KAMLOOPS — The Lions showed at times in 2019 they had the ability to be an explosive offense, but the big plays from anyone not named Bryan Burnham were few and far between.

Michael Reilly didn’t get the protection he needed and the Lions’ offense suffered as a result.

Reilly will have even more weapons to choose from this season with the addition of Lucky Whitehead from Winnipeg, who’s dangerous catching the ball and returning kicks with his incredible speed.

“I’m going to bring some great energy, obviously speed, excitement. Trying to make that home-run play as much as I can,” said Whitehead. “I’m versatile. I can bring a lot to the offense.”

Reilly added, “Lucky is not just a speed guy. He definitely is a speed guy. I didn’t really know what to expect from him coming into camp, but from watching him for two weeks now, he’s a legitimate wide receiver. He can run all the routes. He uses his speed to his advantage, but he’s also a technician with his routes. He can get open in other ways.”

Whitehead says the scheme from new offensive coordinator Jordan Maksymic, who comes from Edmonton where he worked for three seasons with Reilly, will help the Lions utilize all their weapons.

“I feel like overall it’s been a great scheme, great system. There’s a ton of plays out there for every receiver. It’s not one person getting a lot of catches,” said Whitehead. “So far it’s been tough to learn, but I definitely have taken the time to study my playbook and understand what’s going on.”

Along with Whitehead, there’s the always-reliable Burnham, who’s capable of a big play every down. Burnham finished second in receiving behind Hamilton’s Brandon Banks with close to 1,500 yards.

The third and fourth options are just fine as well with Lemar Durant and Shaq Johnson, making this group one of the best in the league.

“We’ve definitely got weapons all over the field,” said Reilly. “It’s a nice problem to have when you’re sitting there trying to figure out how to spread the ball out. We also have other ways of attacking teams and I’m looking forward to seeing how our run game develops, too.”

Out is John White, who had over 1,000 yards in 2019. This year, the Lions may have to do more by committee with no standout running back on the roster, aside from Chris Rainey, who’s more known as a return specialist.

However, at the end of the day, the success of the run game — and pass game with all those wideouts — will be the offensive line and how they protect Reilly this season.
