KAMLOOPS — RCMP are looking for witnesses to a frightening sexual assault in downtown Kamloops over the weekend.

Spokesperson Cst. Crystal Evelyn says the incident happened in the wee hours of Sunday morning (July 18), just after midnight. Officers responded to a report that a man had tried to steal from a woman near the intersection of Victoria Street and Fifth Avenue.

When officers arrived at the scene, a woman told them that, as she was getting into her vehicle, a stranger jumped in, sexually assaulted her and took her phone. The phone was later located and recovered by RCMP.

As the attack was happening, the woman honked the car’s horn and yelled, prompting the man to flee westbound into the alley between Victoria Street and Seymour Street.
