RDN advances plans to expand Ravensong Aquatic Centre

QUALICUM BEACH —A long-discussed vision to expand the Ravensong Aquatic Centre (RAC) in Qualicum Beach is proceeding after the process was paused.

The Regional District of Nanaimo announced it’s moving to the next phase of the design and planning for the 26-year-old facility’s expansion, which could see construction crews on site late in 2023 or early 2024.

Two options currently projected at $16 and $19 million would see a four-lane 25 metre pool added to the facility, along with an upgraded sauna, steam rooms and numerous other upgrades.

The Oceanside Services Committee will receive a recommended expansion option for the facility at a meeting in November to be forwarded to the RDN board for approval.

The report is expected to provide timelines and implications of the City of Parksville’s progress to build an aquatic centre in the community.

Earlier this year the RDN delayed its feasibility work to expand RAC, citing the City of Parksville’s decision to explore building its own aquatic centre as a factor.

Parksville recently paused its pool pursuit amid environmental concerns at a favoured location for the planned facility.
