Controlled burn planned near Deka Lake wildfire

DEKA LAKE, B.C. — B.C. Wildfire Service (BCWS) announced its personnel will conduct a controlled burn operation – with helicopter and hand ignition – today (July 5) at the Deka Lake wildfire.
The goal of the controlled burn is to remove the available fuel between the fire’s edge and the fuel-free guard. BCWS said it slows down and helps limit the spread of the wildfire by decreasing the fire perimeter managed its staff.
BCWS said plans may change as conditions change. In preparation of the controlled burn, ground personnel will continue to lay hose along the fuel free guard to ensure they have water available to extinguish any smoke or flame that may be seen near it. Increased smoke will be highly visible to surrounding communities.
B.C. Wildfire Service’s latest update (July 5 at 10:00 a.m.) said the Deka Lake wildfire’s estimated size is 300 hectares with lightning as its cause.
