Cathedral Grove re-opens with COVID protocols after extended closure

PARKSVILLE — Perimeter fencing has been removed and visitors are allowed back to a premium Vancouver Island tourism draw.

A ministry of environment statement confirmed Macmillan Provincial Park re-opened on Thursday, July 1 with a one-way trail system in place.

“Visitors are reminded to familiarize themselves with and follow the one-way trail network and obey all signage during their visit. Masks are recommended during your visit to Macmillan Provincial Park,” the statement said.

The 740 acre park and world-renowned destination, considered a must-see for out-of-town visitors was closed for more than a year.

The park containing Cathedral Grove was shut down since the beginning of the pandemic due to an inability to ensure people were safely socially distanced on a narrow trail system, according to the province.

Most provincial parks re-opened months ago, however the province elected to keep Macmillan Provincial Park closed.

Fencing was installed at the park the spring of 2020 blocking off parking and access points to trails, however the province acknowledged people still snuck inside.

The province said more than 500,000 people visit Macmillan Provincial Park west of Whiskey Creek annually, showcasing an impressive collection of large old growth ancient Douglas Fir and Cedar trees.
