Nanaimo Parkway traffic hampered due to lengthy oil slick

NANAIMO — The northbound lane of the Nanaimo Parkway was closed due to an oil spill.

Nanaimo Fire Rescue confirmed an extended oil slick stretched in the right hand northbound lane of the Nanaimo Parkway before and after the Northfield Rd. intersection.

One car spun out after hitting the oil and ended up in the ditch on Monday, June 28.

Driver Lawrence Mitchell said he hit the oil spill when turning onto Northfield. “I lost all control. I was fishtailing. I was trying to spin the wheel to gather control but nothing was happening.”

Mitchell said many other cars fishtailed after him, though none crashed fully.

Mitchell was cleared by paramedics.

The right hand lane of the Nanaimo Parkway northbound was closed as an absorbant was laid down to fix the spill.

Though traffic was getting through, drivers were urged to avoid the area.
