Merritt cancels Canada Day fireworks due to dry conditions

MERRITT, B.C. — The City of Merritt has announced that Canada Day fireworks are cancelled due to the dry conditions in the Valley.

Mayor Linda Brown said: “The Nicola Valley is tinder-dry – we had very little rain this spring, and the heat is now absolutely scorching. I know it will be disappointing to many residents that the fireworks display cannot go ahead, but it would be irresponsible to proceed with the current climactic conditions.”

“We will keep this under review, and hopefully be able to do some kind of a display when it’s cooler, in the fall.”

“We would like to remind all Merritt residents that the sale or use of fireworks within the City limits is prohibited at this time of year, unless someone has written authorization from the Fire Chief. This is to keep our community safe, and to protect us all from the “extreme” risk of fire we currently face.”
