Two new COVID-19 cases in Island Health

NANAIMO — Only a relatively low number of new COVID-19 cases in Island Health.

The health authority confirmed the two new on Wednesday, June 23 brought the central Island total to 2,475, which is slightly less than half of Island Health’s total COVID numbers.

There are currently 14 active cases in the central Island, the most out of Island Health’s three regions. South Island saw a drop of five to 10 active, while one active case remains in the northern region.

Across the health authority the number of active cases dropped by three to 25.

There is a data discrepancy between Island Health and the province, based on the timing of COVID-19 results. NanaimoNewsNOW reports local verified data from Island Health. The data discrepancy has increased in recent weeks.

A further 87 new cases were confirmed in B.C. on Wednesday, with nearly half in the Interior Health region.

The number of active cases dropped slightly to 1,119 while the number of people in hospital and patients receiving intensive care saw little change.

There was one new fatality.

A joint statement from the province noted a slight data correction of three in the reported number of total cases and percentage of residents immunized after some second doses were incorrectly classified as first doses.

B.C. public health confirmed slightly less than 25 per cent of B.C. adults are fully vaccinated after two doses.

More than 75 per cent of eligible residents over the age of 12 have received their first dose.
