More than 1 million second COVID-19 doses given in B.C., 6 new in Island Health

NANAIMO — B.C. public health claims more than one million residents are now fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry on Tuesday, June 22 said of the roughly 4.5 million doses given so far, slightly more than one million are second doses.

She said this means B.C. is progressing well in the fight against COVID-19 and the virus won’t dominate the summer.

“We continue to see a sustained drop in hospitalizations, new cases and clusters in communities. This gives us a strong foundation for our summer ahead.”

There were 56 new cases confirmed on Tuesday, with Island Health announcing six new, four of which were in the central Island area.

There is a data discrepancy between Island Health and the province, based on the timing of COVID-19 results. NanaimoNewsNOW reports local verified data from Island Health. The data discrepancy has increased in recent weeks.

There were no new fatalities related to COVID-19 on Tuesday.
