Eight new Island Health COVID-19 cases as provincial numbers remain steady

NANAIMO — A minor increase of COVID-19 cases came Wednesday.

Eight new positive tests were added to the health authority total, now at 5,119 throughout the entire pandemic.

Active cases rose by one to 57 including an unchanged seven in the central Island region.

Island Health saw a sharp increases of cases last week, when roughly 50 new were found compared to the less than 10 the week before.

There is a data discrepancy between Island Health and the province, based on the timing of COVID-19 results. NanaimoNewsNOW reports local verified data from Island Health.

A further 113 new cases were found across the province, up slightly from the day before.

The number of active cases and hospitalizations fell slightly while the number of patients receiving intensive care rose by two.

Four new fatalities were recorded.

A joint statement from the province said 74.6 per cent of eligible B.C. residents over the age of 12 have received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine.

More than 700,000 second doses of vaccine have been administered.
