Provincial trends continue down, Island Health ends week with rising COVID-19 cases

NANAIMO — Fewer new COVID-19 cases were found in Island Health on Friday after a mid-week bump.

Eight new were confirmed by the health authority on Friday, June 11, up from 13 the previous two days. Slightly less than 50 new cases were found throughout the week after less than 10 the week before.

Southern Vancouver Island bore the brunt of the new cases, with seven new on Friday. The central Island region saw only one new case.

There are currently 56 active cases within Island Health, up from 49 the day before. Southern Vancouver Island accounts for 37, with 11 in the central area and eight to the north.

Two people are currently in hospital with none receiving intensive care, according to the BC CDC.

Across B.C. another 180 new cases were confirmed. The number of new cases hovered in the mid-100s for most of the week.

The number of active cases and hospitalizations continued to drop. There are currently 1,880 active cases with 162 people in hospital and 25 of those patients receiving intensive care.

One new COVID-related fatality was recorded.

Slightly more than 73 per cent of eligible B.C. residents over the age of 12 have received their first dose of vaccine. Nearly 500,000 second doses have been administered.
