KAMLOOPS — Thompson Rivers University has announced it will bestow the title of President Emeritus on former president and vice-chancellor Alan Shaver.

Shaver led the university from 2010 to 2018 after coming west from Dalhousie University in Halifax.

In a news release, TRU says the title is “a lifelong designation awarded by the board of governors that distinguishes former presidents who have provided exceptional service to TRU.”

Board chair Barbara Berger credits Shaver with helping the institution build stronger relationships with the broader community.

“Under Alan’s forward-looking leadership, he led a number of transforming initiatives such as the development of partnership agreements between TRU and Tk’emlúps te Secwépmc and between TRU and the City of Kamloops, as well as TRU becoming a full member of Universities Canada and the Research Universities’ Council of BC, and establishing the Thompson Rivers University Community Trust,” Berger said.

Under Shaver’s watch, TRU opened its new law school and launched an ambitious development plan that has seen extensive construction on the campus.

He will receive his new recognition as part of virtual convocation ceremonies next Thursday (June 17).
