Kamloops encouraged to get active for ParticipACTION Community Better Challenge

KAMLOOPS — It’s only natural that once the sunshine comes, citizens of Kamloops get more active.

This year, the onset of summer coincides with a national physical activity challenge that could net the winning community a cool hundred grand – however, the challenge is about more than winning a cash prize for Kamloops.

If you’re like most Kamloops residents, you’re heading out walking – running – golfing – biking – or doing something active this time of year.

“I’ve started to get into mountain biking, and I live right close to the Bike Ranch,” Chelsea Tekonomy said. “I can zip over and do a quick hour-long bike ride if that’s all I have time for.

”I live on the edge of Kenna Cartwright (Park), so I enjoy that frequently,” Jodi Lebourdais told CFJC Today. “I have two small children and I take them with me everywhere, and we just explore, and climb, and play.”

So, while you’re out participating in your regular physical activity during the month of June, why not join in on the ParticipACTION Community Better Challenge?

“All you have to do is just download the ParticipACTION app and you can begin tracking minutes right away,” Lebourdais explained. “You also want to make sure you join the challenge, and once you’ve joined, it’ll just use your postal code to track your minutes for Kamloops.”

Kamloops in the spring and summer is the ideal place to get outside and get active. However, the beauty of this challenge is that any kind of activity counts towards our community total.

“It’s movement minutes,” Teknomoy, Active Living Coordinator for the City of Kamloops explained. “If your big to-do list is to clean the house and get some spring cleaning done, those count towards your movement minutes. Let’s utilize those to add to our big goal.”

The community that can log the most minutes by the end of the month will be crowned The Most Active Community in Canada – a title that comes with a $100,000 grand prize. However, Lebourdais, who is the Play Coordinator at PLAY Kamloops says the challenge is about more than just winning a prize.

“It’s all about bringing the community together and just moving your body at whatever age, or stage, or ability that you’re at, and reconnecting again after a really weird year,” Lebourdais says.
