KAMLOOPS — A Kamloops Bike Riders Association (KBRA) member crossed paths with two bear cubs at the bottom of the Triple Lumen Mountain Bike Trail west of Pineview Valley.

The video captured on Monday (June 7) showed a mountain biker going downhill and nearly colliding with a young bear who wandered on the trail.

Cam Marshall, KBRA vice president, said bikers coming across bears on their path isn’t a common occurrence, but it’s the reality of biking in the wilderness.

“Even though it’s close to residential, it’s still a wilderness grazing area,” Marshall said. “There is a juvenile bear with a couple of young cubs. They’ve been there in the area for a few weeks now. It was a startled bear running across a startled rider. Those types of occurrences are very rare. We’re in their neighbourhood out there, so it’s important that we’re aware and use our heads. We live in Canada; we’ve got bears.”

Marshall said the best ways to avoid conflict with a bear is to create a lot of noise and make yourself appear big. KBRA encourages riders to give the bears a lot of room and to keep pets on a leash, or leave them at home, until they move on from the area.
