When you make the normal unexpected – sparks ignite!

After sending out this month’s e-newsletter, I received many (many, many!) auto-responder messages that said something  like …”I am away on vacation and will be returning to the office August 15th. I will respond to your email then. Thank you.”

Yawn.

But then I received one (one and only one) like this …

“Vacation Bug Attacks Richard Lannon (August 2nd to August 12th, 2013).

It happens this time every year. Richard Lannon has been stricken by the vacation bug. This illness tends to attack him every year around the same time. It is a summer prone illness. Family forbid him to interact with business associates and sometimes friends as it takes away from the required recuperation period. Rest, relaxation and isolation are the key to weathering the vacation bug and overcoming this serious time of year need. Fun with his sons are the other solution. Expected recovery date is August 12th, 2013. Until then Richard has no choice but to be off-line.

When asked, Richard said it saddens him that he can’t be hot wired to his work during this period of time and wanted to ensure he will connect with his business associates and friends once the appropriate isolation and recuperation period has expired. Unless it is urgent, don’t expect a response till after August 12th, 2013.

All is good though as Richard is good to his word and will respond promptly upon his relief of the Vacation Bug.”

Wow!

If you want to stand out from the crowd, if you want to give people a little smile in their otherwise ho-hum workday, consider using an under-utilized touchpoint like an auto-responder to add a little spice to life.  I have to imagine my colleague Richard (http://www.braveworld.ca)  made a little fun for himself  along the way too.
Have a memory-filled day!
