Active COVID-19 cases fall in central and northern Vancouver Island

NANAIMO — The central Vancouver Island area has less than 10 active COVID-19 cases.

The region, stretching from north of the Malahat to the northern tip of the RDN and west to the Tofino area, has eight active COVID-19 cases as of Monday, June 7. This is a drop of six from the Friday before.

North Vancouver Island saw its active cases reduced by half in the same time period, from four to two.

The total number of active cases in Island Health fell from 36 to 29.

Island Health as a whole saw 11 new cases over the weekend. Eight were in the southern regions, with the remaining three discovered in central Vancouver Island.

There is a data discrepancy between Island Health and the province, based on the timing of COVID-19 results. NanaimoNewsNOW reports local verified data from Island Health.

Across B.C., 481 new cases were confirmed over the weekend reporting period.

Friday to Saturday saw the most new cases with 218. It was the first time in roughly one week over 200 new cases were found. The remaining two time periods had significantly fewer new COVID cases, hovering just above 130.

The two days around 130 new cases is the lowest new confirmed in one day in the province since Oct. 14.

The number of active cases fell to 2,102. There are currently 199 people in hospital, a decrease of 25, with 63 of those patients receiving critical care.

Tragically, there were a further 12 COVID related fatalities.

Approximately 74 per cent of eligible B.C. residents have received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine as of Monday, June 7.
