KAMLOOPS The United Way Thompson Nicola Cariboo is collecting feminine hygiene products Friday (May 28) in an effort to end period poverty.

Partnering with Kamloops Alliance Church, the United Way is providing a drive-thru event for donations. The drive-thru opened at 3:00 p.m. and will continue until 7:00 p.m, with people dropping off products or financial donations.

“One in four people who menstruate do not have the products that they need to meet their basic needs,” said United Way TNC Executive Director Katie Neustaeter. “That’s a shocking statistic right here in Canada and one that I think a lot of people were unaware of not very long ago. Our goal at United Way is to end period poverty. We don’t think it’s acceptable, we don’t think it’s necessary and we think we have more than enough in this beautiful country to provide for everyone.”

Last year, the Period Promise campaign brought in more than 21,000 individual products in Kamloops.

Once all of the products have been collected, Neustaeter says they will be distributed according to need.

“We’ve done a needs assessment with the not-for-profits in our region that provide to this particular demographic of vulnerable people,” she said. “They gave us feedback on what their ideal target would be to meet the need and then we divide up our product that we bring in according to that need and then it’s distributed to those not-for-profits.”
