SPCA seizes 17 puppies from Kamloops-area breeder with history of animal abuse

KAMLOOPS — The B.C. SPCA says it has seized 17 neglected puppies from a Kamloops-area breeder.

In a news release, the organization says SPCA special constables seized 16 Pomeranian and Yorkshire terrier-cross pups, as well as one three-month-old Labrador retriever pup.

The SPCA says the dogs’ living conditions were found to be unsanitary and overcrowded with poor ventilation.

Constables also seized seven chickens that were being cared for in similar conditions.

Chief Prevention and Enforcement Officer Marcie Moriarty noted the breeder has been convicted and penalized for animal cruelty in the past.

“We have dealt with this individual in the past and she was convicted of animal cruelty in 2005, following a BC SPCA investigation where numerous dogs were seized. The judge handed down a sentence that included a ban on keeping animals, but unfortunately the ban had expired,” said Moriarty in the release.

Moriarty noted a tip to the SPCA’s animal cruelty hotline led to the breeder’s new location. She notes the puppies were being sold for up to $2,000.

While the puppies are being cared for by the SPCA, they are not currently up for adoption while the legal process unfolds.
