KAMLOOPS — More parents in the Thompson, Cariboo and Shuswap regions will be able to return to work, go back to school or pursue other opportunities.

The B.C. government has announced 144 new licensed childcare spaces, including 112 in Kamloops, 24 in Barriere, and eight in Lillooet.

In Kamloops, the Otipemisiwak Centre is set to open in spring 2023. Métis Nation BC will partner with Lii Michif Otipemisiwak Family and Community Services to create the childcare facility that offers programming rooted in Métis values, teachings and cultural practices. It will offer 112 new licensed childcare spaces, including 24 infant and toddler spaces, 24 spaces for children aged three years to kindergarten, 40 preschool spaces and 24 school-age spaces.

The Yellowhead Community Services Society will create a childcare centre within a new affordable housing complex in the District of Barriere. With a projected opening in fall 2022, the centre will offer 24 new licensed childcare spaces, including eight infant/toddler spaces and 16 spaces for children aged three years to kindergarten. The centre will have a garden to grow fruit and vegetables that will be used for snacks or provided to families.
