Domtar in merger talks with Canadian rival

KAMLOOPS — Domtar says it is in merger talks with Paper Excellence, a Canadian rival.

Based in South Carolina, Domtar’s local paper mill is one of Kamloops’ largest employers, providing more than 300 direct jobs. The estimated economic impact of the Kamloops mill is $575 million, according to a company fact sheet.

The company owns 13 paper mills throughout North America.

In a news release, Domtar says it “has been made aware of press speculation” of a merger with Paper Excellence.

It acknowledges the talks are taking place, but says “these discussions may or may not result in an agreement.”
