TOBIANO, B.C. — B.C. Wildfire Service crews are responding to a fire near Tobiano, on the southern shore of Kamloops Lake Thursday afternoon (Apr. 22).

Fire Information Officer Kyla Fraser says seven personnel are responding and the fire is estimated at one or two hectares in size.

Fraser says there are no structures threatened, and the fire is thought to be human-caused. A witness told CFJC Today the fire popped up near the CP Rail tracks that run through the area.

Meantime, Fraser is warning of strong winds forecast for the Kamloops Fire Centre over the next 24 hours.

“We’re asking people to please be extremely cautious with any burning they are conducting – or even to postpone it if that’s an option. It can be quite dangerous to burn in windy conditions as the wind can pick up embers and transfer them over into dry fuels, therefore starting a wildfire that we, of course, didn’t intend to start.”

The wind is forecast to calm by Friday morning.
