KAMLOOPS — A man is in custody after a report of an armed robbery near Aberdeen Mall Monday (April 19) afternoon.

Kamloops RCMP said the man allegedly entered a retail store, stole merchandise and revealed a firearm in the process. He was seen running near Laval Crescent and Notre Dame Drive.

A nearby school, Beattie Elementary, was placed in a hold-and-secure while police searched the area. Multiple frontline officers, including the Police Dog Services Unit, responded and tracked a suspect back to the Star Lodge on Columbia Street West.

A BB pistol was seized as part of the ongoing investigation, but Cst. Crystal Evelyn said any use of a firearm in a criminal offence, including one that turns out to be an imitation, presents a high risk to police and the public.

“Luckily, today’s occurrence ended with the quick arrest of a suspect. We thank the school and the community for their assistance while police investigated and ask anyone who witnessed anything which may assist in our investigation to please call us,” Evelyn stated.

Anyone who may have witnessed anything or has any information related to this incident is asked to contact the Kamloops RCMP at (250) 828-3000 and reference file 2021-12331.
