VICTORIA — Heading into the weekend, B.C. has set new records for active cases of COVID-19, hospitalizations and intensive care patients, according to the province.

In a prepared update, Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry reports 1,005 new cases of the virus in B.C. Friday (Apr. 16), including 110 within Interior Health.

There have now been 117,080 total cases in B.C., spread out as follows:

  • 29,163 — Vancouver Coastal (up by 259)
  • 66,814 — Fraser Health (up by 536)
  • 4,233 — Island Health (up by 49)
  • 9,950 — Interior Health (up by 110)
  • 6,738 — Northern Health (up by 51)
  • 180 — Reside outside of Canada (unchanged)

There are now 10,081 active cases of COVID-19 in B.C., with 425 people in hospital and 127 in intensive care. All three of those figures are new highs for B.C.

Within Interior Health, there are 904 active cases Friday, a decrease of six from Thursday. There are 23 people in hospital and 10 in critical care.

Six more people have died of the virus, raising the provincial death toll to 1,530. None of the deaths took place in Interior Health, leaving the regional death toll at 121.

Henry reports 15,877 people are under active public health monitoring due to direct COVID-19 contact.

Another 105,291 people are considered fully recovered from the virus, or 90 per cent of all known cases.

A total of 1,282,091 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered to British Columbians.

Meantime, Health Minister Adrian Dix issued a news release Friday afternoon addressing the vaccine rollout and the news from Pfizer and Moderna announced earlier in the day. The federal government revealed Canada’s Moderna shipments will be delayed, but the country will receive eight-million more doses of Pfizer vaccine than initially expected.

Dix called the delay from Moderna disappointing, and reinforces the urgency to receive more vaccine, sooner.

“…[T]he federal government has said it will send additional doses of Pfizer in May and June. Doses in April would be more helpful, but we appreciate the ongoing effort and commitment of the federal government,” said Dix.
