Kamloops RCMP weekend includes assaults, dangerous impaired driver

Apr 13, 2021 | 3:40 PM

KAMLOOPS — Kamloops RCMP officers responded to 338 calls over the weekend. Some of the more notable calls are described below.

Roadblock evasion unsuccessful

On Saturday night (Apr. 10) at about 11:30 p.m., RCMP officers had a roadblock set up in the 2000-block of Lac du Bois Road above Batchelor Heights.

A vehicle approaching the roadblock made a U-turn and drove away from the area.

Officers caught up with the vehicle, finding it was affixed with a stolen license plate. A later search found bear spray, two imitation guns and drugs inside.

The vehicle’s occupants were arrested and the driver was ticketed for failing to have insurance or a driver’s license. More charges may come forward after the investigation is concluded.

Downtown assault

Just before 10:00 p.m. Saturday night, RCMP were called to the intersection of Seymour Street and Fourth Avenue downtown, where a man was being treated for a head injury.

A suspect, described as having red hair and a beard, allegedly struck the victim with a blunt instrument.

Mounties patrolled the area but could not track the suspect down.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call Kamloops RCMP at (250) 828-3000 or Crime Stoppers at 1 (800) 222-8477.

Speeding and impaired

An impaired driver was nabbed for some very erratic driving behaviour Sunday night (Apr. 11).

RCMP were conducting speed enforcement on an area highway when an officer saw a vehicle travelling 64 kilometres-per-hour above the posted speed limit.

About a half-hour later, a vehicle believed to be the same one was seen speeding again in the same area.

The officer tracked down the vehicle and issued violation tickets to the driver, but then became suspicious that he was impaired. Roadside breath tests indicated a ‘fail’, meaning his blood-alcohol level was above .08.

The man was slapped a 90-day driving prohibition and a 30-day vehicle seizure.

(NOTE: An earlier version of this story described the vehicle driving on the wrong side of the divided highway. That was incorrect.)

Acadian assault

RCMP would like to track down the suspects in an assault at the Acadian Inn on Columbia Street.

At about 11:00 p.m. Sunday night, officers were called to the motel, finding a man suffering from serious injuries to his head and body.

The victim was taken to hospital for treatment, but did not cooperate with investigators.

Surveillance video, however, showed the man being chased by a man who then assaulted him with a blunt object.

Suspect description:

  • 5’8″

  • Short brown hair
  • Wearing a white checkered button-up shirt, a dark-coloured hooded jacket and blue jeans

Vehicle description:
