REVELSTOKE, B.C. — RCMP in Revelstoke say a defiant fitness trainer was hit with thousands of dollars in fines after leading a group fitness class last week.

In a release, RCMP say they were called to a local fitness business last Thursday (Apr. 8) where several people had gathered to participate in a class.

Group fitness classes are prohibited by a B.C. Public Health Order (PHO) enacted to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

Officers attended and spoke with a representative of the business, explaining the current PHO and the consequences for not following it.

Even after that discussion, the owner-operator went ahead with the class.

RCMP issued tickets of $2,300 for hosting a non-compliant event and $230 for failing to comply with direction.

“Overall, most members of the public are respecting the prevention orders issued by public health authorities and they understand it is not optional,” said Sgt. Chris Dodds of Revelstoke RCMP in the release. “While we certainly can, and will enforce the provisions available to us under the Emergency Program Act, we continue to encourage everyone to voluntarily comply with the provincial health orders, so enforcement actions are not required.”
