B.C. shatters daily COVID-19 case record with 1,293 new infections Thursday

VANCOUVER — B.C. has set another daily COVID-19 case count record – exceeding the previous record by more than 200 cases.

In a briefing from Vancouver Thursday afternoon (Apr. 8), Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry reported a whopping 1,293 new cases of COVID-19. The previous daily record was 1,077, set this past weekend.

Eighty of the newly-found cases were found within Interior Health.

The new cases swell the overall B.C. case count to 108,278, spread through B.C. as follows:

  • 26,945 — Vancouver Coastal (up by 448)
  • 61,809 — Fraser Health (up by 645)
  • 3,818 — Island Health (up by 69)
  • 9.163 — Interior Health (up by 80)
  • 6,363 — Northern Health (up by 51)
  • 178 — Reside outside of Canada (unchanged)

There are now 9,184 active cases of the virus in B.C., up by 456 from Wednesday. There are 336 active cases in hospital, including 101 in critical or intensive care.

Within Interior Health, there are 760 active cases of the virus, up by 43 from Wednesday. Twenty-four people are in hospital, with nine people in intensive care.

Two more people have died of COVID-19, increasing the province’s death toll to 1,493. One of the deaths took place in Interior Health, raising the regional death toll to 118.

There are now 15,203 people isolated and under active public health monitoring due to direct COVID-19 contact.

A further 97,462 people are considered fully recovered from the virus, or 90 per cent of all recorded cases.

Henry reported that 985,001 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered to British Columbians to date.
