SOUND OFF: The latest trends in cosmetic dentistry

Apr 5, 2021 | 2:19 PM

Canadians have no problem looking after their teeth — 84 per cent of Canadians report their oral health as good or excellent while 75 per cent visit their dentist annually. It’s no surprise, then, that the demand for cosmetic dentistry is booming across the country. Thanks to the newest technological advancements and latest trends, Canadians are benefiting from faster and less-invasive treatments with better-looking and longer-lasting results.

Natural-looking teeth whitening

Teeth whitening has always been a popular treatment, but now patients are asking for a more natural look rather than artificial bright white smiles. By using the same products and techniques, dentists can achieve a natural-looking finish simply by leaving the whitening agent on the teeth for less time or giving treatments less often. In particular, hydrogen peroxide paste is a popular whitening treatment; it’s activated by a special light that can whiten teeth by as many as eight shades. Some dentists also offer simple at-home whitening treatments available on prescription. Treatments take just thirty minutes to one hour to complete on average with little to no discomfort for patients.

Porcelain veneers

Although porcelain veneers aren’t a new treatment, they’ve recently been revamped and now appeal to a younger demographic. Consisting of very thin porcelain covers custom-made to fit the teeth, veneers are used to perfect smiles. In the past, dentists had to remove a large piece of natural tooth to fit the veneers. But now, new techniques mean only a very thin layer of natural tooth needs to be filed before fitting, making the process faster and less invasive for patients. Veneers can be used to correct a host of dental issues like chips, minor gaps, size issues, and discoloration. Completely customizable, patients can choose the color and even include small imperfections on their veneers for natural-looking results. With correct care, veneers can last for decades — at least 15 to 20 years on average. They’re also incredibly resistant to stains and require only a little more care and maintenance than natural teeth.

Artificial intelligence

Although not a treatment itself, artificial intelligence (AI) is being used to improve cosmetic treatments for patients. By using a mix of patient data, imaging technology, and computer programs, dentists can show patients what the final results of their treatment will look like before it even begins. AI is particularly useful for patients considering orthodontics: adjusting the teeth’s position can drastically change the overall facial structure. Outside the dental office, apps are even available to provide patients with images of how their teeth will look after simple treatments like whitening or even more invasive procedures that may change the jawline. Ultimately, this technology is designed to help patients make more informed decisions about their cosmetic treatments.

Cosmetic dentistry is a great way for patients to perfect their smiles with long-lasting and natural-looking results. Teeth whitening, porcelain veneers, and artificial intelligence are some of the latest trends improving the speed and quality of cosmetic dental treatments for patients across Canada.
