KAMLOOPS —The Tournament Capital Centre opened up as a vaccination clinic Monday (Mar. 22) after a big week of vaccinations at McArthur Island.

Interior Health says around 3,000 people were immunized at the McArthur Island Curling Rink last week. This week, vaccinations are taking place at the TCC, with about 300 people getting a dose of vaccine each day.

These appointments will be ramped up as time goes on.

“I could not be more delighted to not only have one effective vaccine, but we’re now at four effective vaccines and being able to roll it out with such speed and such organization in a safe way,” said IH Medical Health Officer Dr. Carol Fenton. “I’ve been personally monitoring it for any safety signals and the adverse events reports and so far nobody has even needed to be hospitalized. We’ve had some allergic reactions and some hypersensitivity reactions, but they’ve all been self-limited. The ability to use the vaccination as a tool to end the pandemic is really becoming real and so it’s very exciting for me.”

Monday, vaccinations were limited to seniors born in or before 1943 and Aboriginal people born in or before 1956.

According to Dr. Fenton, the age category will be dropping slightly every day this week. Fenton says an online booking system in being developed and should be available in the coming weeks.

“The online system is being developed for the province, so it’s being developed at the provincial level, and we are hoping that it will be available to us by the end of March or early April.”
